“My dad was the first to get his Visa, he visited the United States and immediately liked it. My mom and I stayed in Colombia and applied for a Visa. The process took a year before final approval. We worked hard to learn English and found work upon arrival to the U.S.”
”Primero vino mi esposo al país. Después de eso, recibió ayuda para que yo y mis 2 hijos pudieran presentar la solicitud y venir. Empecé a aprender el idioma con los niños en la escuela. Luego di a luz a nuestro tercer hijo.
“l was born in Russia and lived in Moscow and worked most of my life in a bank as an office director. I had a vacation and I got a Visa to America and came to Miami for a cruise. I fell in love with Miami at first sight and I told myself that I would definitely come back here to live and exactly a year later, I moved and I arrived 6 years ago on a tourist Visa and I met my husband here and we decided to get married and so I got a green card and after, I became a citizen. We also have a son, he was born here in America. I love this Country, my American dream came true.”
“As a little girl, my mother dreamed of traveling to the USA. In her 30s, she traveled back and forth to the US. At age 38, she met my father at a party just before her departure flight from the US. From that night on, for an entire year, my mother visited my father during her travels to the US, and they eventually married a year later. She then began the process of obtaining her green card. To avoid overstaying her welcome in the US, she traveled every six months to the Bahamas. She endured a lot of criticism and accusations of marrying for legalization. However, they have now been happily married for 25 years. For my mother, it all started as an American Dream, proving that timing doesn’t always matter. She accomplished something she had always dreamed of.”
“Everything started in 2017. After ending a long-term relationship and realizing that I had no strong ties to Colombia, I decided to seek new horizons. The main reason behind my decision was my son’s well-being—he was constantly nervous and scared living in the city. Since nothing was holding me back, I felt free to choose any country in the world to start fresh. My son was my priority, and I was determined to build a better future for him.”
“The United States had always been on my list, though it was never my top choice. One day, while scrolling through social media, I came across a message from a former classmate offering me a place to stay in Fort Lauderdale. Without hesitation, I bought plane tickets and made the decision to go. We arrived in January 2018. Within a week, I managed to enroll my son in school, and just a few days later, I found a job at a mall selling phone accessories. It quickly became clear to me that this was the right place for us—there were more opportunities, my son felt safe, and I could envision a brighter future here.”
“After six months, I decided to stay. My visa was about to expire, so I applied for an extension, which was approved. During this time, I met my current partner, and we started building a life together. I also initiated an asylum process to legalize my status. Over the years, I built a family, started a small business, and created a stable and happy life. My son was thriving and felt safe. Together with my partner, we bought a house, and today, we are a happy family of six.”
